The Shannara Chronicles Season 1 Review

The Shannara Chronicles is a fantasy television series based on the novels by Terry Brooks. It follows three heroes as they protect an ancient tree to stop the escape of banished demons. The series was filmed in the Auckland Film Studios and on location elsewhere in New Zealand. The first season of The Shannara Chronicles premiered on MTV in the United States on January 5, 2016, and consisted of 10 episodes.

The main characters of the series are Wil Ohmsford (Austin Butler), a half-human half-elf who inherits magical stones from his father; Amberle Elessedil (Poppy Drayton), a princess of the elves who is chosen to be the caretaker of the Ellcrys, the tree that holds the demons at bay; and Eretria (Ivana Baquero), a human rover who joins them on their quest. They are aided by Allanon (Manu Bennett), a druid who guides them and reveals their destinies.

The first season adapts the events of The Elfstones of Shannara, the second book in Brooks' original trilogy. The season follows Wil, Amberle, and Eretria as they journey to the Wilderun, a dangerous land where they must find the Bloodfire, a source of magic that can restore the Ellcrys. Along the way, they face various threats, such as the Dagda Mor (Jed Brophy), the leader of the demons who wants to destroy the Ellcrys; the Changeling (Shushila Takao), a shape-shifting demon who infiltrates the elven palace and causes chaos; and the Reaper (Gentry White), a fearsome demon who hunts them down.

The first season of The Shannara Chronicles received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Some praised the show for its visuals, action, and performances, while others criticized it for its deviations from the source material, lack of originality, and teen drama elements. The show has been compared to other popular fantasy series, such as Game of Thrones, The Lord of the Rings, and The Hunger Games.

The first season of The Shannara Chronicles is available on Blu-ray and DVD, as well as on various streaming platforms. The Blu-ray release features a high-definition video quality with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and an audio quality with Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. The Blu-ray also includes some special features, such as deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with the cast and crew.

If you are a fan of fantasy and adventure, you might enjoy watching The Shannara Chronicles Season 1. It is a thrilling and entertaining series that takes you to a world of magic and danger. However, if you are looking for a faithful adaptation of Brooks' novels or a more mature and complex story, you might be disappointed by the show's changes and simplifications.
